Montfort - Services ------------------------------------------------------------ Stabler - Gliglen Gilglen, the Elven stabler Gilglen's is located quite close to the Dragon's Inn. An elf who always just had a way with animals, Gilglen stables mostly beasts of burden, but has never turned any animal away. Sometimes the neighbors complain (especially Stonehand, the blacksmith next door), but Gilglen is such a likable guy that most such complaints are quickly soothed. Besides being a gifted animal empath, he also is an exceptional veterinarian. Unfortunately, Gilglen has a phobia almost unheard of amongst his kind; agoraphobia (fear of open spaces). Gilglen's is so intense that even a fairly dense forest canopy gives him no relief. Consequently, sick animals must find their way to him, as he will not set foot outside his stables. Gilglen has a young half-elf apprentice named Susan. The girl is hopelessly in love with them, although he has no idea that that is the case. Susan runs his errands for him, and occasionally even makes house calls for simpler cases. Shy and retiring, most visitors to the stables never see the girl who peeks out at strangers from behind drawn curtains. ------------------------------------------------------------ Blacksmith - Stonehand Stonehand So noted with a sign depicting a small hand carved in granite, Stonehand is the name of the smithy and of the blacksmith himself. Stonehand is the stereotypical dwarf. His work is quite good. His demeanor is gruff and short. He charges a fair price for his work, and few have had cause to quarrel. Unlike most dwarven smiths, Stonehand never specialized. He'll make a sword as readily as he'll make a horseshoe. He is not a finesmith, however. Ask him to make you a wrought gold necklace and he'll laugh you right out of his shop. When not working, Stonehand can most often be found chasing stray animals from his backyard or down at the municipal building registering complaints about his neighbor, Gilglen. He has been known to appear occasionally at the Dragons Inn. ------------------------------------------------------------ Tailor - Theo Brooke Theo Brooke, Tailor That's what the sign says, anyway. Of course, if he put out a sign saying "Theo Brooke, Fence" he'd be arrested. Theo does, in fact, know how to sew, and does just enough to make his business look legitimate. If you're looking to buy a special item, or if you want to unload some treasure quick, Theo's is the place to go. As fences go, Theo is a bit greedy. Still, he's good at what he does, so most folks who deal with him in that capacity tolerate his prices. Theo is a regular patron of the Dragon's Inn; adventurers are some of his best customers. They frequently have strange curios they're happy to get rid of. Additionally, they're always going places, and usually don't mind being paid a "courier's fee" to deliver a sealed bag or two to someone in a different city. Remember, Theo is always very careful in his business dealings. Otherwise, he'd have been thrown in jail long ago. Theo is crafty, silver-tongued, and fairly handsome. Hugh of the Dragons Inn probably knows what Theo is about, but for some reason, allows him to continue anyway. ------------------------------------------------------------ Healer - Sakoian Sakoian, Healer and Physician Sakoian is a half-elven spell singer who specializes in positive necromancy; that is, he's a healer. Over the years, he's actually created his own healing art that combines magic, herbs, and knowledge of anatomy and physiology. Sakoian is very, very old. Fortunately for the townsfolk, he has not been stingy with his lore and has seven apprentices who actually do most of the work. His healers are friendly, efficient, and good at listening and story- telling. They also tend to be a little pricey (as much as a gold piece for simple treatments). However, they do usually get good results. ------------------------------------------------------------ Seamstress - Mama Chelsea Mama Chelsea's Mama Chelsea is a seamstress. Her prices are quite high (figure 15 to 30 gold for a complete outfit on the average), but she works with almost inhuman speed and the outcome is always outstanding. Her outdoor gear is of special note; boots that last for years, waterproof cloaks that are actually waterproof, gloves that truly keep the fingers warm. A rotund, jolly woman, Mama Chelsea lives on the second floor of her shop with her apprentice Elizabeth. Elizabeth will someday make as fine a seamstress as Mama Chelsea. Folks find her to be tall, thin, and quiet, although she is not shy, necessarily. ------------------------------------------------------------ Gymnasium - Mixy Montfort Gymnasium This large building used to be the old training grounds for the city watch. When the watch's new barracks were built, Pierson Wolth the Gray bought the place, then hired Mixy Honeywell to fix it and to make him money. Mixy created a "super-gym." One can fence, wrestle, perform aerobics, and get lessons at the gym. The gym also sports public baths, masseurs/masseuses, healers, and barbers. For only three coppers, anyone can enter the gym and use the exercise floor or the main bath pool. Fighting lessons vary according to the student's skill level, but run about a silver to a gold per lesson. Massages run three silver per session. Healers may cost as much as eight silvers, and usually are not skilled enough to treat serious ailments. A shave and a haircut typically runs another five coppers. Private baths cost from a silver to ten gold, depending upon the amenities desired. The second floor of the building is given over entirely to Pierson's library and magical workshop. The wizard is rarely seen around the city, but rumors have it that he has been looking for just the right person to serve him as an apprentice. Besides running the gym, Mixy is also aflame to map out the ruins she discovered far below Montfort. The baths have a rather large sewer access, and it turns out that there are old, old passages leading to a long-buried city. Mixy mostly just wants to map the area and is pretty busy herself, so she's happy enough to give adventurous souls copies of her maps to date in return for their continuing her map. And she always feels real bad when some of them never come back... ------------------------------------------------------------ Carpenter - Allen Rest Wooden Rest This is the workshop of Allen Rest, a carpenter. Allen has five apprentice carpenters, and he keeps them busy since he also is a qualified joiner as well as a general carpenter. In general, his prices are reasonable, although he is known to raise and lower his fee depending on if he likes you. Allen's real love is coffins. He has an entire room in his shop dedicated to them. He has many historical coffins, as well as some that he's made himself and displayed there. Many townsfolk whisper that Allen's really a vampire, but others point out that he seems to have no problem with sunlight. Besides, what kind of a vampire would earn a living working with wood? ------------------------------------------------------------ County Orphanage A great, rambling building made of brick, and with all too many orphans. It is not a happy place, although the 'Beadle'
